The acronym of SMS stands for three layers of materials : Spunbond-Meltblown-Spunbond.
In SMS construction, cloth-like, abrasion resistant spunbond polypropylene forms the outer layers.
The inner layer is formed from a web of microfibers that filter out many water-based liquids.
The outer spunbond layers are made up of randomly deposited 15-20 micron diameter continuous
polypropylene fibers that serve to provide fabric strength, durability, abrasion resistance, and
protection for the meltblown layer.
The inner meltblown layer provides a barrier and is typically comprised of 1-3 micron.
